HANCEVILLE, Alabama – Hazel Green coach Todd Jeffers lauded junior guard Kischonn Lee’s defense.
Never mind the 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 on free throws from a player that normally chips in around six to eight on a good day.
Lee’s dozen that all came in the first half, along with 22 points and 21 rebounds from sophomore Lewis Sullivan and 18 points from junior guard Austin Dempsey, propelled the Trojans to a 71-66 victory Friday over Austin in the Class 6A Northwest Regional championship game.
A nearly sellout crowd at 5,000-seat Wallace State-Hanceville — Hazel Green fans nearly doubled Austin, which had a large following — looked on as the Trojans earned their first berth in the state tournament since coach Jerry Dugan’s team won it all in 1967. Read more…

Hazel Green powers past Huntsville, 73-68
HAZEL GREEN, Ala. — Hazel Green shot a season-high 55 percent from the floor and out-rebounded Huntsville 40-19 to earn a 73-68 win Tuesday night in a crucial 6A Area 16 contest.
Four Trojans scored in doubble figures. Sophomore Lewis Sullivan poured in 25 points and 10 rebounds in just 25 minutes of action. Austin Dempsey added 14 points, Willie Spencer had 13 and Kischonn Lee had a season-high 10 points.
A quick spurt at the end of the first half staked Hazel Green (15-9, 3-2)to a 36-28 halftime lead, a lead that doubled during a dominant third quarter. Early in the fourth, consecutive layups by Sullivan pushed Hazel Green’s lead to 18 at 62-44 with 6:20 to play. But Huntsville scratched and clawed to give itself a fighting chance.
William Powell cut the Trojans’ lead to 11 with 3:08 left with an old-fashioned three-point play. Huntsville forced a turnover on the defensive end and Marquis Grays cut the lead to nine on a transition bucket. Huntsville would draw as close as five with1:12 to play on a Zach Jones free throw, but that would be as close as Hazel Green would allow it to get. Sullivan sank four straight free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
The Trojans will now roll into Friday night’s contest with Sparkman with a chance to force a 3-way tie for first place with a win. In that scenario, the top seed and host of the area tournament would be decided by a flip of a coin. Friday’s tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Sparkman High School.
